Cam Jazz Presents : Landon Knoblock, Joe Rehmer, Austin Mcmahon
Banal and rhetorical notions are countered by the message of this young musical trio, whose language is distinguished not so much by the complexity as the refinement, the degree of elaboration of the idioms, the game of interlocking, successions and progessions.
Not too many excesses, distorsions, genetic affections and medleys. Something much more direct that, despite the lexical richness, can always be grasped by everyone. By anyone who wants to pessess it.
Language is just what Landon Knoblock's search is aimed at. The young, but not green pianist from southern Florida has been active for some time around Brooklyn. This music is worked out in the name of oral culture, direct relations, continuous exchange, unwritten sources handed down from traditional and technological know-how.
Landon is a pianist and composer and favours writing. Then, the slowing down, with moments of impromptu creation and recollections of past pianists come to mind, but everyghing's alright. Because the pianist is moving without losing the grace of the sound and control of the instrument, constantly pushing ahead of the rhythmic beat, editing the pronunciation of the phrases, evoking the essential nature of a puff of wind, like in Juanted Memory and even more in New Beauty, or the constriction of an unexpected palpitation, Why The Frown ?. Dynamics make the difference, always. The trio lays down its arms of virtuosity and concentrates on the melodic construction of the phases, with great mobility and a vast expressive gamut , they're good at the lento and semi.lento tempos. The coninuity with tradition is just like hide-and- seek. Find it, then run and hide to elude it : Silvie a Montreal is the programmatic manifesto of this harmomious game. The sound of this trio is elegant and solemn, like a gunman at noon, ready for a shootout.
The question, when the last tone rings out, is : if someone with a more high-flown name than Landon Knoblock had cut this cd ?
Note By Federico Scoppio
When Ermanno Basso from CamJazz called asking me if I wanted to record a trio record, I knew I had to make something special. I had been thinking about the idea of human optimism and human imperfection, and how the two themes relate. I wanted to musically express the human nature of striving beyond one's self of setting goals and asprirations, in spite of failure. There is musch beauty in the imperfect nature of people, and the music on this album captures that feeling.
Landon Knoblock.
